IT job interview

Here are 10 Tips for great IT job interview questions to ace your next interview:

In this day and age, the IT job interview is a necessary evil. You have to go through one to get a new job so it’s best to be prepared for it.

When it comes to acing your IT job interview in 2024, it’s essential to start strong with a compelling introduction when asked, ‘Tell me about yourself.’ In a cyber security interview, this is your chance to showcase your expertise and passion for the field. Begin by briefly summarizing your professional background, emphasizing relevant experience, certifications, and your dedication to staying updated with the latest cyber threats and security measures. Highlight any significant accomplishments or projects that demonstrate your skills and problem-solving abilities. Remember to tailor your response to the specific job and company, showcasing how your unique background aligns with their needs and goals. This initial impression sets the tone for the rest of the interview, making it a critical moment to grab the interviewer’s attention and leave a lasting positive impression.

1) Do your research

It’s important that the person interviewing you knows that you’re interested in working there. So before going into an interview, learn as much about the company as possible. What products do they offer? What projects have they completed recently? Is their staff happy with the direction of the company?

2) Research the people interviewing you

If possible, find out the name of whoever is going to be interviewing you and do a little bit of research on them as well. You don’t need to know their life story but at least read some recent articles they’ve written or check out what kind of projects they’re working on now. It shows that you care enough about this opportunity that you want to make a good first impression with whomever your interviewer is going to be. You can check their Linkedin profile also if this suits your situation.

3) Build Your Personal Brand

Before you even get to the interview, it’s important that you know who you are and what makes you unique.

The very first question that many of my interviewers asked me:  tell us about yourself ,  what are the daily tasks that you do in your Job?

For this, you should write your professional story like how did you start your journey in the industry what all-important projects you worked on, or what all things you automated, etc. and edit it before every interview as per the Job Description of that particular interview.

Confused about how to write your professional story?  Take guidance from experts.

4) Research the company’s a product/service offering(s)

You don’t have to be an expert on what they offer but it’s important that you get a general understanding of what they’re all about. It will help you formulate some questions to ask them in the interview and give you more insight into why they’re looking for someone new in the first place. You can usually find this information with a quick Google search, or in their press releases or About Us page if they have one.

5) Study up on events

Particularly when applying for jobs in the technology industry, I’ve found that it’s usually helpful if you keep up to date with what’s going on in your field of interest. If they’re hiring for a role related to web technologies, you’ll want to read up on recent developments (e.g., Azure, AWS) and be prepared to discuss them intelligently with the interviewer(s). If your research shows that something new is coming out (e.g., a new service or feature of Azure or AWS), try getting some hands-on experience with it before arriving at the interview so that you can ask any questions relevant to its proper use once you sit down across from your potential employer.

6) Know Your Strengths

You have strengths as well as weaknesses in your professional and personal life. You might know that you’re great with numbers or detail-oriented or artistic or good at motivating yourself when things get tough. Whatever it is, don’t be afraid to talk about what makes you unique! Some people might not think they have much to offer but everyone has something special to bring to the table so long as you can communicate what that “something” is. And part of that communication happens when interviewers ask you questions like:

  • Tell me about what interests/motivates/excites you in a job
  • What kind of work do you enjoy doing most?
  • What are some projects to which you’ve contributed significantly?

You want them to walk away thinking, “Wow! That person is pretty cool!” because you’re good at communicating your strengths to other people.

7) Get Ready to Showcase Your Strengths

Aside from the interview, if you have any projects that are related to the job or just help show off what you can do that’s great! It’s helpful if they could start getting an idea of your capabilities even before you sit down for the first time. If it makes sense within the context of your project/career, be sure to highlight something relevant in your cover letter or resume as well (“I recently led a clan on X game where we were able to achieve Y ranking”). This will help them visualize who you are instead of having them read through endless words on paper.

8) Prepare for scenario-related questions

You may be asked by interviewers to elaborate on a particular topic like the below question:

Can you tell us how you used the Conditional access policy in securing your environment?

Now, this kind of question gives you a great opportunity to showcase your technical strength and experience. You can tell any scenario from your day-to-day work life and impress them. Like how you created a conditional access policy that blocked legacy authentication and that saved the tenant and Office apps from many malicious activities.

9) Practice Reiterating Your Strengths

It sounds simple but it’s easy to forget something you already know so if you want to be extra sure that your interviewer knows the essence of who you are so far as a job candidate, it’s a good idea to practice summarizing a few things prior to arriving. For example, when asked “Why should we hire you?”, have some quick and ready answers in mind for why they should choose you over someone else.

10) Ask Questions!

This is your chance to find out more about what they’re looking for and whether or not there might be an opportunity down the line where you could contribute.

I have always used this opportunity to showcase my interest in learning the technology if it is a technical round, so in this case, I generally ask the interviewer to help me with the answer or solution for the question that I might not have been able to answer in that particular interview. This will make the interview a bit more interesting and leave a good impact on an interviewer who loves technology.
